When this guide fits: You operate or maintain a UPS battery string and need a repeatable way to inspect it, decide whether replacement is justified, and prove the new configuration still delivers the required runtime.

When it is not suitable: This is not a live-DC work instruction, a substitute for an OEM service manual, or a protection and grounding design. Use qualified personnel and the approved site method of procedure (MOP) for all battery work.

A green UPS status light does not prove that its battery string can deliver the required minutes. The operational goal is simple: keep a baseline, look for change, act on evidence, then verify runtime after every material change.

The maintenance loop #

  1. Inspect: Look for physical damage, leaks, swelling, corrosion, blocked ventilation and alarm changes.
  2. Trend: Keep comparable readings against the same string baseline and record room conditions.
  3. Decide: Escalate unusual changes using the OEM thresholds and your criticality policy.
  4. Replace: Use matching, approved components and the site MOP; do not improvise a partial-string repair.
  5. Verify: Reconfirm load, battery configuration and required runtime before closing the work order.

This is a planning template, not a universal interval prescription. Set final frequency from the battery and UPS manuals, service contract, insurer, local requirements, and the consequence of lost runtime.

When to replace or escalate #

Do not use calendar age alone and do not use a generic impedance percentage from the internet as a replacement threshold. Escalate to the OEM, qualified service provider, or approved engineering owner when any of these is true:

  • A battery has visible damage, leakage, swelling, corrosion, unusual heat, or a safety alarm.
  • A comparable measurement changes materially from its documented baseline or from peer blocks, according to the manufacturer’s limit.
  • An OEM-approved functional test does not meet the documented runtime requirement.
  • The protected load, room temperature, battery configuration, or discharge history has changed enough that the original runtime basis is no longer credible.
  • A fire, flood, impact, seismic event, or abnormal transfer affects the equipment.

The action may be further diagnosis, a scheduled string replacement, or an immediate safety response—not automatically a battery purchase.

Replacement and acceptance workflow #

Temperature and environment: what to watch #

Battery life and runtime are sensitive to temperature, airflow and charging conditions. Do not assume one rule of thumb applies to every chemistry or cabinet. Trend room conditions beside battery readings, keep the UPS air path clear, and follow product documentation for environmental limits. Safe boundaries #

  • Battery strings can deliver dangerous fault current. Only trained, authorized personnel should perform physical work.
  • Use the OEM torque specification and approved tools; do not infer a torque value from this page.
  • Follow local rules and the vendor process for transport, recycling and disposal.
  • A UPS self-test can be useful evidence, but it is not automatically equivalent to an approved full-runtime acceptance test.
